Urgent Mental Health and Counselling
Suicidal Ideation
If you, or someone you know is feeling suicidal, there are people you can talk to:
- Speak to a friend, family member or someone you trust.
- Call the Derbyshire Mental Health Support Line on 0800 028 0077 (24 hours per day, 7 days per week). You can talk to them either anonymously or, involve us by asking them to pass on your information to the team at Buxton Medical Practice.
- Call the free Samaritans 24-hour support service on 116 123 or contact Samaritans online. they provide Free non-judgemental listening support.
- Use the Staying Safe website for support, information and making your own safety plan. Alternatively, download the “StayAlive” App to your mobile phone which has links to lots of useful resources and can help you develop a staying alive plan.
- contact NHS 111, though be aware of delays in accessing this service.
- Phone the practice on 01298 24105 and ask for a mental health triage appointment, a clinician will call you back.
- Phone 999 if you require urgent medical intervention or cannot keep yourself safe.
- Go to your nearest emergency department, though be aware that there are increased demands and transmission risks in emergency departments at this time.
- Accident and Emergency Departments are a safe space and have on call liaison Psychiatry teams who should be able to help you further. The nearest to Buxton are Stepping Hill or Macclesfield.
Text back services
Sometimes it’s difficult to talk about your problems, if you have a preference or need or desire to text your concerns then text “SHOUT” on 85258. Shout is the UK’s first and only free, confidential, 24/7 text messaging support service for anyone who is struggling to cope.
Samaritans
Samaritans provides non-judgmental emotional support for people who are experiencing feelings of distress, despair, or suicidal thoughts.

Stay Alive App
The Stay Alive app is a suicide prevention resource for the UK containing useful information and tools to help you stay safe in crisis. You can use it if you are having thoughts of suicide or if you are concerned about someone else who may be considering suicide. It also has tools and support for those worried about someone else.
Papyrus
Papyrus is for children and people under 35 who are experiencing thoughts of suicide or for anyone concerned that a young person could be thinking about suicide. Call their free helpline on 0800 068 4141 from Monday to Friday 9am to 10pm, weekends 2pm to 10pm, bank holidays 2pm to 5pm. Text: 07860 039 967 or email pat@papyrus-uk.org
The Silver Line
The Silver Line is a free helpline for older people across the UK that’s open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Call on 0800 470 80 90.

Derbyshire Social Services can provide support in a wide number of areas.

The Grapevine Wellbeing Centre is a recognised Safe Space for anyone struggling with their wellbeing or for those that suffer any mental health condition.

Supporting someone else with Mental health difficulties can be difficult in and of itself.

If you need urgent help
If you, or someone you care about, is experiencing mentally ill health and is in a crisis or emergency, there are many ways that you can get help:
- Contact us on 01298 24105 and speak to our reception team, the clinical team know your medical history, and will decide with you the best action to take. If you would prefer to describe your difficulties in writing and have a phone, then please ask the reception team to send you a text so you can write to the on-call team. Please tell them it’s about mental health so we can help you to see or talk to the best trained clinician in the circumstances. If you are struggling to access services, please contact us either on the phone, via our website or in writing so we can try to help you further.
- If a health or social care professional (your care coordinator or key worker) has given you a specific phone number to call when you are concerned about your condition, continue to use that number. An Example of this might be your CPN or the crisis team.
- For adult social care during office hours contact “Call Derbyshire” on 01629 533 190 from 8am to 8pm on Monday to Friday, and from 9.30am to 4pm on Saturday. Outside normal hours, call the emergency duty team on 01629 532 600.
- Mental health charity Mind suggests practical things you can do to help yourself if you’re feeling suicidal or are in a crisis. It has information about where you can get help as well as links to blogs and websites where people have shared their experiences of dealing with a mental health crisis.
NHS 111
You should use the NHS 111 service if you urgently need medical help or advice but not if it’s a life-threatening situation.
NHS 111 is available 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Calls are free from landlines and mobile phones.
Call 111 if:
- you need medical help fast but it’s not a 999 emergency.
- you think you need to go to accident and emergency or need another NHS urgent care service.
- you don’t know who to call or you don’t have a GP to call.
- you need health information or reassurance about what to do next.

Staying Safe

Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM)
CALM is for anyone who needs to talk about life’s problems. Call their free helpline on 0800 58 58 58 or contact them online from 5pm to midnight every day.
Childline
Childline helps children and young people under 19 with any issue they’re going through. Call their free helpline on 0800 1111. Because of the coronavirus outbreak, you can only speak to a Childline counsellor online or on the phone from 9am to midnight.

The Thomas Theyer Foundation
The Thomas Theyer Foundation is a charity offering support to children and young people with special educational needs and those experiencing difficult life circumstances for families/carers. They recognize the many physical and mental health benefits of exercise and strive to increase access to exercise, in particular outdoor activities. They also provide the opportunity for breaks for children and young people affected, as well as their families/carers. They support young people with mental health support through therapeutic services.
The charity was set up following the death of Thomas Samuel Theyer in 2013 and became a registered charity in 2015.

Zink in Buxton can provide support regarding multiple areas from acting as an emergency food bank through to Welfare advice and support in finding employment.
